Can I get a side of fries with that?

I chose to read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.
The title pretty much gives away what the book is about.  So far it is really interesting to see all these people become so successful in the fast food business.  People like William Rosenberg (Dunkin' Donuts), Glen W. Bell, Jr. (Taco Bell), Keith G. Cramer (Burger King), Dave Thomas (Wendy's), Thomas S. Monaghan (Domino's), Harland Sanders (Kentucky Fried Chicken) either dropped out of school, never made it to high school or used to be in the army, marines.  They founded these fast food restaurants by getting ideas from each Mcdonald's, which was founded by the McDonald Brother's.
Now each of these men are successful along with their fast food restaurant's.

Drive-Thrus

The key component that made fast food restaurants successful were the cars.  In the city of Los Angeles in 1940, there was an estimate of one million cars.  This meant that people got lazier and didn't want to get out of there cars to get food so they went through drive-thrus.  The owners of these restaurants thought of ways to make their food known so they built chain restaurants right next to the highways.  This way the cars passing by would see the signs and stop by to grab a burger.  The creation of cars and highways in this era was such an important factor for fast food restaurants.  

The fast food restaurant owners tried to make more money by advertising to children.  They also tried to get the cheapest ingredients and supplies to save money.  After reading 100 pages of this book, it changed my mind about fast food.  I usually don't eat a lot of fast food, but next time I crave it, I will choose a different option.  Im looking forward to reading the rest of this book because I want to know more about the secrets behind fast food.

  1. I found it funny that fast food places began to take off as people became lazy. This problem is even worse in todays world!

  2. I'm reading the same book and found it interesting to learn how all these fast food places were founded. I find it interesting to read and look forward to finishing the book. To bad Monaghan sold his share of domino's for a used Volkswagen!!!

  3. Ah, fast food really does suck, but for some reason, we're all drawn to it! I hope to live to a day when fruits and vegetables are advertised and promoted as much as the Big Mac or Whopper.

  4. Honestly, the creators of these chains were brilliant! Ha, just making lazy people lazier, of course it would work!! I personally have a strong dislike toward fast food, I used to eat it and then just developed a disgust toward it over the years. I didn't start to dislike it for any particular reason at all either, I just randomly stopped liking it. I must say though, I am glad my body decided to dislike it, after all it is pretty gross.

  5. I feel like when women started to join the work force it really helped the fast food business. When these women started working the easily availability of fast food was a good alternative to cooking for the family. I don't know this for a fact, just a thought.

  6. I think this sounds pretty spot-on since people are finding more and more ways to be lazier and to get cheaper food. McDonald's is so notorious because you don't have to wait long and you get to go through those drive-thru's which mean less work.

  7. I think I watched a documentary on McDonalds back in high school that discussed how it went from a mom & pop burger shop to the booming industrial franchise we know of today. Back then, I feel like their business was conducted with a bit of honesty... now McDonald's restaurants are everywhere and it just seems like the company is only in it for the money now...

  8. That actually sounds like a really interesting book. Especially since people never really think about who is behind the making of these places. They just kind of appear and no one really questions it.
